Efren Penaflorida is 2009 CNN Hero of the Year

A Filipino is CNN’s hero of the year. Efren Penaflorida sometimes referred to as the “Pushcart Educator” emerged as the top hero of the year by CNN.
Penaflorida’s emergence as the final winner recognizes his efforts to increase the quality and penetration of education in the Philippines where poverty incidence is rampant. His pushcart classroom becomes an icon of hope to any one in the world who aims to have a better life through getting substantial education.

Efren Penaflorida is among the top 10 heroes of the year contenders. The online voting was initiated to run for 7 weeks gathering a total of 2.7 million votes according to CNN. Penaflorida will receive $100,000 and plans to use the money for the Dynamic Teen Company.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper hosted the event at the Kodak Theater where all star performances were done by Carrie Underwood, Leona Lewis and Maxwell just to name a few.

Congratulations Efren. You are truly an inspiration not only to Filipinos but to all people around the world who wants to make a change in any way they could.
