Sun Broadband Prepaid – The Real 2Mbps Speed

I previously reviewed the Sun Broadband Wireless postpaid service and gave it a negative feedback. Today, that will change a bit since I am going to review their Sun Broadband Prepaid service. The Sun Broadband Prepaid service requires you to purchase a USB modem (just like in the postpaid) in order to avail of their internet connection. The current program involves a P1895.00 charge for the modem but is definitely a steal. Why? Because the modem package includes a Sun Broadband Prepaid Sim card worth P50 and loaded with 180 free internet hours. It is equivalent to about P3,600 pesos worth of prepaid airtime. So it is like getting the USB modem for free plus additional P1700+ worth of free internet hours.

OK I’ve told you before that Sun Broadband Wireless Speed Problems tends to concentrate on the problem of deliberate speed capping. This is the intentional activation of a ‘speed wall’ which in layman’s term is the maximum allowable speed per consumer. Can you imagine a speed cap of 640kbps instead of reaching a ceiling speed of 2mbps?  This notion is eradicated with the Sun Broadband Wireless prepaid because the speed that I am getting now reaches up to 2.15 Mbps. I’ve heard of a theory in the Sun Broadband forum I frequent that the company actually has a separate speed allocation for their prepaid users because they tend to profit more from prepaid accounts. This is actually verifiable because the regular rates for Sun Broadband Prepaid is P10/30minutes of usage. This is the same rate implemented by Globe Tattoo and Smart Bro Prepaid. Now if you will compare this to Sun Broadband Wireless Postpaid, they will truly earn a lot from prepaid accounts.

Sun offers P799/month for unlimited internet. If my calculations are correct that equates to P799/43200 minutes (60x24x30). If you will convert that to prepaid rates that is equivalent to P14,400! But they are only charging you P799 so in effect you have to sacrifice something, your speed.

Now since Sun Broadband prepaid charges P10/30minutes, the company definitely earns higher compared to its postpaid service. So as they earn higher, speed is better and up to now I am still reaching more than 2mbps.Youtube is streaming great, pages load fast and even my downloads reach up to 200kb/s. So if you plan on getting the optimum speed from Sun Broadband internet, then I suggest you opt for the prepaid service. But make sure that you have enough money to spare because quality does not come cheap. i recommend this to people who are not considered heavy internet users. I guess you can manage a P20/hour charge if you will simply play Farmville on Facebook.

  2. Hi Communicator,
Yup I just got my new SUN prepaid USB stick and it has a 180hour package load. It’s kinda fast actually. I haven’t tried Smart and Globe prepaid but I guess those modems do not have free 180 hours. :)
