It is a skin condition that produces oily, flaky and scaly skin surfaces. It is commonly called dandruff but may be termed seborrheic dermatitis if found in other parts of the body. Usually, babies have this condition called as “cradle cap”. In adults and adolescents, seborrheic dermatitis is also called body dandruff especially when the eyebrows, back of ears and cheeks are affected.

What are the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis?

Skin is flaky and scaly. It can also become greasy on affected parts. Sometimes, these white skin flakes do not actually affect the inner layer of the skin which is only superficial.

What causes seborrhea?

Scientists and doctors are still unsure. But previous studies point out to hormone imbalances, neurological disorders or impaired immunity. These studies are still not confirmed.

Treatments for seborrheic dermatitis

If dandruff occurs in the scalp, the usual over the counter treatment is enough. Shampoo with salicylic acid and zinc proves to be effective. If you still have symptoms after a long period of time, consult your doctor. Some physicians will only provide soothing lotion to alleviate the itchy and sharp pain associated with seborrhea. Seborrheic dermatitis has no cure but can be treated. It is not fatal. Men are usually affected by this skin condition.

  1. If it’s on the skin, I thought it’s just dryness that’s why the use of lotion is advisable. Good to know it’s nothing serious.
